Renewing the City

In the central core of St. LouisCity and County, we see the extremes of the human predicament. We see the city as a haven of protection for those who are persecuted or undervalued elsewhere. We see impressive cultural accomplishments, learning, beauty, community, opportunity, diversity, commerce … a place to which people travel from great distances to find an education or a life-saving medical procedure. Yet we also see the rust, the frustration, the perversion, the poverty, the injustice, the boarded up buildings, the violence, the inequality, the suffering, the racism, the isolation, the loneliness, the marginalization, the car break-ins, the alienation from God and others. The city needs renewal.

When we look at the Central Corridor of St. Louis from the Loft District downtown through Midtown and the Central West End to Clayton, University City and Dogtown, we see an area where over a hundred thousand people live, work and play. You see most of the region’s major medical, media, artistic and cultural institutions, and both the region’s major research universities. Memorial seeks to be a beacon for the gospel in this post-Christian, postmodern heart of St. Louis. We want to serve our city by bringing gospel renewal into every sphere of life with a committed and engaged presence in the city, dedicating our resources toward serving people in the Central Corridor.
