Community groups at Memorial aren’t programs. They are intentional ways of developing Christian friendships. Some groups are young and urban, while others are intentionally intergenerational. Community groups—the small communities within the larger church community—are the context in which much of the mutual shepherding & encouragement of the church take place. By committing to seek Christian relationships, we are opening our souls up to spiritual growth.
The ancient church “devoted themselves to ... the fellowship,” meeting together in their homes (Acts 2:42, 46). Most Christian growth happens within authentic, honest, committed Christian friendships. We see community groups as an opportunity to foster such relationships. Small groups are always being formed, and most people in the church are involved. We don’t just seek to have Community Groups, but to be a church of Community Groups.
What Does a Community Group Looks Like?
A typical new group is 6 – 12 people who gather in a house or apartment one night a week. Groups are facilitated by trained leaders that are given oversight and support. Most groups involve a component of group Bible discussion, prayer and service. Some of them plan meals together on a monthly basis and social events during the summer months. We would encourage you to seek out a community group that is close to your home. However, some of you may need to venture away from your own neighborhood in order to find a group that will best suit your needs (e.g. parents may be interested in one of our groups with childcare available, or you may want a group on a particular night of the week).
How Do I Find the Right One for Me?
You may want to check out a couple Community Groups before deciding which is the best fit. We’d encourage you to attend each group 2 – 4 times before moving on to another group. It typically takes that long to really know whether a group will be a good fit. The easiest way to check out a group is by contacting the church office, who will help you connect with a group leader.
