University Students

Surrounded by Washington University, Fontbonne University, Saint Louis University and numerous other colleges and seminaries, Memorial has always been a college church, offering family, community and service opportunities to those who may live in St. Louis for only a few years. Our membership includes university faculty and staff, graduate and professional students as well as undergraduates.

We seek to be a church where someone with questions can belong among us even before they believe as we do… a place where honest doubts can be raised. A place where we aren’t afraid to enter into doubt with a willingness to find answers. This willingness isn’t because our faith is weak, but because many of us have walked similar paths. Our clergy were converts from unchurched backgrounds. George became a Christian as a Washington University history student in the 1960s. Greg became a Christian as a University of Virginia architecture student in the early1990s. We believe that the claims of Jesus are intellectually credible, that humanity cannot live without God, that Christian hope speaks powerfully to the world’s suffering, and that the biblical story of redemption is not merely the best answer—it is the only answer—to the human predicament.

We believe in education, the arts and the sciences. Human knowledge and learning are our calling to “think God’s thoughts after himself” and are part of humanity’s calling to establish civilization. Christian humility can help us understand how little we know, how much remains to be learned, and how valuable a tool knowledge can be at the service of others.

We welcome involvement from students in the various campus ministries in the area. We believe that God calls Christians to work together—not to compete—in bringing the Welcome of Jesus to academia.
